A powerful storm system passed through the New York area on Tuesday, May 15, knocking down a tree that fell on an SUV in Newburgh, in Orange County, killing a girl inside. Her mother had just parked the SUV in their driveway and the family was unloading it when the tree fell.

The 11-year-old was trapped inside and first responders worked to free her. She was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead. The mother suffered minor injuries, CBS New York reported.

Two other people were reportedly killed in Connecticut as a result of the storm.

Governor Andrew Cuomo called a state of emergency (pdf) in Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, and Sullivan counties.

The National Guard was set to be deployed on Tuesday to help state, county, and local governments with efforts ranging from debris clearance to traffic control.
